Sound familiar?

You know this night.

The house is finally quiet. And that’s exactly when tinnitus gets your full attention.

You check the clock. You do the sleep math. You try to remember all the advice. Turn the fan on. Don’t look at your phone. Stop thinking about it.

Is it louder tonight? Am I sleepy yet? If I fall asleep now, I’ll get four hours. Will it keep me awake?

And the harder you work at sleep, the more awake you feel.

Then the next day arrives with the night still attached. It’s harder to focus. Your patience runs out sooner. And by evening, bedtime has started to feel less like rest and more like a test.

If that’s you, nothing is wrong with you. Your brain is doing exactly what brains do in the quiet. Once you understand why, the nights start to make a lot more sense.

Why nights feel so different

The candle didn’t change. The contrast did.

During the day, your brain has a lot to take in: conversation, movement, the sounds all around you. At night, the world goes quiet and there’s simply less competing for your attention.

Think of a candle.

Candle in daylightIn bright daylight, the flame barely stands out.
Candle in a dark roomIn a dark room, the same flame looks much brighter.

Tinnitus at night works the same way.

It’s not just your ears

Tinnitus most often shows up alongside changes in hearing. But how much it takes over your night has a lot to do with attention and your nervous system.

When something feels uncertain, the part of your brain designed to keep you safe starts keeping watch. It checks. And checks again. That’s the irony: you want to stop noticing it, but you keep checking to see whether you’re still noticing it.

Quiet roomLess to compete with the sound
CheckingIs it louder? Am I asleep yet?
More alertYour body gears up, not down
Harder to restSo you try harder, and the loop repeats
The sound may be more noticeable. That doesn’t mean it’s more dangerous.

What most people try

  • Drown out the sound
  • Try harder to fall asleep
  • Follow a perfect bedtime routine
  • Push through and hope tomorrow is better

What helps more

  • Add sound that feels supportive, instead of trying to drown tinnitus out
  • Help your body settle, without trying to force sleep
  • Choose a tool that fits what’s hard right now
  • Give yourself permission to rest, even if you’re still awake

Who this is for

This kit was made for you, even if…

You’ve only ever tried a white noise machine.White noise can help but options for using sound to support sleep doesn’t stop there. I’ll show you how to use background, soothing and interesting sound as well as when to reach for each.
You’ve been told there’s nothing you can do.This isn’t accurate or true. There are practical skills that change how your brain and body respond on hard nights.
Your hard nights don’t all look the same. Some nights it’s the sound. Some nights it’s your mind or your body. That’s exactly why this kit gives you options instead of rules.
You’re too tired for another big program. This isn’t homework. It’s a kit you open when you need it, built to be used half asleep.

The honest part

I don’t have a magic wand. They didn’t hand those out at graduation.

I’m not going to promise to make your tinnitus go away, and I’d be wary of anyone or anything that does. What I can offer are practical tools for the nights when tinnitus feels especially hard: ways to settle your body, respond to a racing mind, and take some of the pressure off sleep. You may still hear tinnitus, but you can have more ways to care for yourself when you do.

My approach

The question that changes the night

Sleep is something your body already knows how to do. It doesn’t respond well to effort. So instead of another routine you have to get right, the Sleep Rescue Kit starts with a different question.

Most sleep advice asks“How do I make myself sleep?”
→
The Sleep Rescue Kit asks“What do I need right now?”

The method

The Four S’s

To answer that question, I’ll teach you a simple framework I call the Four S’s. It isn’t a checklist. It’s four kinds of support you can reach for, depending on what the night needs.

The first SSignal

Let your brain know the day is winding down.

A simple evening rhythm that tells your brain it’s time to slow down, the way we help children get ready for bed.

“The day is ending.”

The second SSettle

Give your body a chance to shift gears.

Breathing, relaxation, and gentle mental tasks that lower alertness without forcing anything.

“I can soften without forcing.”

The third SSupport

Ask what would make rest easier right now.

Using sound to soften the spotlight on tinnitus, and giving your attention somewhere gentle to go.

“What do I need right now?”

The fourth SSurrender

Let your body’s sleep system do its job.

Letting go of the clock and the fight with being awake. Rest still counts, and sleep often follows.

“My body can take it from here.”

In the eveningWhenever the night needs it

You don’t need to do all of this. Some nights you may need to settle. Some nights you may need more support. And some nights the most helpful thing you can do is surrender.

What do I need right now?

At 2 a.m., you don’t need every tool. Start with what you notice.

Tinnitus is taking all my attentionThe room feels too quiet, or I keep checking the sound
→
SupportBackground, soothing, or interesting sound. Notice Without Adding.
My mind won’t stopI’m thinking, planning, worrying
→
SettleCognitive shuffle. Engaging sound.
My body feels keyed upI’m tense, restless, or wide awake
→
SettleExtended exhale. Progressive relaxation. Compassion breath.
I’m fighting being awake“I need to sleep…”
→
SurrenderRest Without Sleep. It’s Okay to Be Awake. Permission to Rest.

This exact map comes with the kit as a phone screen, so it’s there when you wake up.

Why I made this

Hi, I’m Emily.

I’m Dr. Emily Hensarling, an audiologist and tinnitus coach. I’ve worked as a clinical audiologist for more than two decades and specialize in tinnitus management.

I’ve met so many people with tinnitus who were managing during the day, but still struggled when nighttime came. Sound can and does help, but it doesn’t always address the racing thoughts, the pressure to fall asleep, or the frustration of being awake at 2 a.m.

I created the Sleep Rescue Kit to offer more support in those moments. It brings together the tools I use to help people understand what’s happening, settle their nervous system, and choose tools and skills based on what might help in that moment.

It won’t make tinnitus disappear or guarantee a good night’s sleep. But it can give you ways to respond when a night feels hard. You don’t have to solve the whole night. You can start with the moment you’re in.

With Kindness,
Dr. Emily

The investment

What have you already spent on sleep?

Take a second and add it up.

  • The white noise machine$
  • The sleep earbuds or headband$
  • The app subscription$
  • The supplement someone swore by$

If the total is more than $47 and you’re still waking up at 2 a.m. without a plan, this is the missing piece. Not more equipment. A way to use what you have, and to know what to do when the night gets hard.

Before you decide

Questions you might be asking

Will this make my tinnitus go away?

No. The Sleep Rescue Kit won’t make tinnitus disappear. Please be wary of anything or anyone that promises it will. The Sleep Rescue Kit gives you ways to respond when tinnitus feels especially intrusive at night, whether you’re dealing with racing thoughts, pressure to fall asleep, or frustration about being awake. The goal is to make those moments feel more manageable, even if the sound is still there.

Tinnitus is in my ears. Why are we talking about my nervous system?

The sound you hear is real. Your hearing system is very likely involved, and so is your brain’s response to the sound. How intrusive tinnitus feels can change with your attention and level of alertness. That’s one reason it may fade into the background during a busy afternoon but feel harder to ignore at 2 a.m.

The kit gives you ways to help your body settle and shift your attention when nights are hard. These tools don’t erase the sound, but they can help you respond to it differently.

I’ve already tried white noise. Is this more of the same?

No. Sound is one part of the kit, but white noise is only one option. You’ll learn how to choose between background sound, soothing sound, and something more engaging, like a calm story or meditation, based on what you need that night. The kit also offers tools for racing thoughts, a body that won’t settle, and the frustration of being awake when you want to sleep.

I’m exhausted. I don’t have the energy for a course.

I understand. I don’t want to give you more to do when you’re already tired. Think of this as a kit you can return to, rather than a course you have to complete. The first couple of videos are short, and they explain why these tools can help and how to choose one when you need it. Watching them also unlocks the resources that follow. You can revisit the videos anytime, and there’s no schedule to keep up with. Choose what fits the night you’re having.

What if I use it and still don’t sleep?

I want to be transparent: that can happen. The tools aren’t a guarantee of sleep, and I know it’s frustrating to still be awake when you’re exhausted. One part of the kit, called Surrender, helps you work with those moments by easing the fight with being awake and finding ways to rest, even when sleep hasn’t come yet.

Is this medical advice? Should I see someone first?

The Sleep Rescue Kit is educational and isn’t a substitute for individualized medical care. If your tinnitus is new, has changed significantly, is mainly in one ear, pulses with your heartbeat, or comes with sudden hearing changes, dizziness, or other concerning symptoms, please see a healthcare professional first.

How long do I have access?

You get on-demand access to the full kit. The audio practices, guide, and phone screens are downloadable, so they’re yours to keep on your phone.

Tonight could look different

The next hard night will come. You can meet it differently.

You wake up at 2 a.m. The sound is there. But instead of the clock and the math, you reach for your phone and ask one question. What do I need right now? You press play. Your shoulders drop. And whether sleep comes in ten minutes or an hour, you’re resting, not fighting.

The tricky thing about 2 a.m. problems is that by breakfast, they feel manageable again. So you tell yourself you’ll sort it out later. Then the night comes back around.

If you’ve been meaning to do something about your nights, this is a gentle, practical place to start.
